SPORTS EVENTS ON DISTRICT FIELDS

SATURDAY GAMES RUGBY AND SOCCER HOCKEY CONTESTS START The continuation of the Rugby and Association Football competitions commenced on Gisborne and Wairoa district grounds last week, the opening of the Waikohu Rugby Sub-Union fixtures and play in the majority of the East Coast centres will provide attraction in the various areas on Saturday, while the season’s first games under the Poverty Bay Hockey Association will draw supporters of that sport. In the senior competition of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union, Celtic meets H. 5.0.8. on the Gisborne Oval No. 1 ground. Last season Celtic were narrowly beaten in the championship playofl with Marist, while H. 5.0.8. finished the competition in third position only a point below Celtic. The tatter two teams met t.hrce times last season. H. 5.0.8. won the first game by eight points to three and the second by six to live, while the last game resulted in a three-all draw. Celtic had the bye last week, while H. 5.0.8. had the advantage of a hard competition game with Old Boys, but some weeks of training and play in the Easter tournament for the Spillane Cup have given Celtic a good standard of fitness and combination for the stage of the season. Saturday’s encounter should provide very interesting play. Old Boys, who showed flashes of good form in defeating H. 5.0.8. last week, are to meet the Kiwi seniors on No. 2 ground at the Oval. In scoring three tries against the four registered by Marist in their opening game, the Kiwis, in comparison with the side of last season, showed as a greatly-im-proved combination, notable for a hard-thrusting pack On this new Gisborne Kiwi form. Old Boys should be extended on Saturday in a keen tussle much different from the last meeting of the teams when the scores showed a margin of 20 points.
