EGG SHORTAGE
“GATE” SALES BLAMED APPEAL BY I.M.D. OFFICERS (P.A.) _ WANGANUI. April 23. Claiming that the serious egg shortage was more the result of increased “gate” sales than of a shortage of poultry food, a representative meeting of the Wanganui Registered Poultrykeepers’ Association last night pledged itself to co-operate unreservedly with the Internal Marketing Division and market its combined production through the approved “floors.” Speakers from the Internal Marketing Division emphasised the seriousness of the position in Wellington which had arisen from the reduced quantity of eggs placed at the disposal of the division by the provincial “floors." Without the co-operation of the “floors” the, division could not fulfil its function of ensuring equitable distribution. The speakers admitted that the difficulties of obtaining poultry food were responsible for the lower production of eggs this year, but asserted that the increase in “gate” sales which followed the removal of restrictions had brought a further reduction and resulted in unbalanced distribution. The producers were urged to safeguard the prices and the subsidy which combined marketing ensured.
