SAVING OF ELECTRICITY
Sir.—Surely one of the most obvious methods of saving electricity would be to eliminate the late shopping night. Probably enough power would be saved between 5 and 9 o'clock on Friday nights to allow private dwellings to escape the very drastic and most inconvenient cuts that have been imposed. Considering the extremely limited Stocks at present on retailers’ shelves and the certain prospect that the shortages will be very much more serious in the near future the closing of shops on Friday nights seems to be an arrangement which would result in little loss or inconvenience to anyone. RETAILER The above letter was referred to the president of the Gisborne Retailers’ Association, Mr. B. R. Adair, who commented that his association executive had offered to work with the Poverty Bay Electric-Power Board in every way possible, in the endeavour to save power. The association had been advised that its members should observe normal hours of trading, subject to such cuts as might be imposed from time to time; and while there were some members who wished to eliminate Friday night shopping sessions, a majority held that until the Power Board requested a _ change the late night should be retained.—Ed.
