MR. ROPIHA APPOINTED

NATIVE DEPARTMENT POST (P.A.) WELLINGTON. March 14.

The appointment is announced of the assistant Under-Secretary and deputy Native Trustee of the Native Department. This is a new position to provide assistance to the Undersecretary, Mr G. P. Shepherd. Mr Tipi Tainui Ropiha has been appointed by the Public Service Commisson to the new post. At present superintendent of land development n the Lands and Survey Department at Te Kuiti, ?/Ir Ropiha joined the Public Works Department as a clerical cadet in 1913 at the age of 17 years after a distinguished career as a scholar at Te Aule College. After service during the First World War he joined the Land and Survey Department in 1919 and in 1936 was transferred to the Native Department to undertake professional duties. On his appointment to the position of chief surveyor at Blenheim in 1940 he returned to the Lands and Survey Department and went to major land development areas at Te Kuiti in 1945. Mr Ropiha is a member of a wellknown Maori family of Porangahau.
