AUSTRALIAN ATHLETES
FIVE IN WORLD CLASS CLAIMS OF SELECTOR (9 a.m) PERTH. Jan. 31. The selector, Mr. Hugh Moriarty, says that Australia has five athletes in world class capable of winning Olympic t -- The men he names are: John Treloar, New South Wales, 100 and 200 metres. Jack Bartram, Victoria, 400 metres, John Winter, Western Australia, high jump - T Bruce, South Australia, broad jump; and C. Green, Western Australia, 100 and 400 metre hurdles. _ Mr. Moriarty says that though George Campbell is the most idolised runner in Australia, he would have no hope o beating the world's befit middle-distance men, as his best mile time is 4 nun. 1 /sec. Bruce's Australian record broad jump of 24ft. lOjin. was the worlds best leap for the past two years. _ Winter retired from the championships after tne Australian high jump record of 6ft. GjSin. Only two better jumps have been recorded in the world during the past iz months. Mr. Moriarty considers that if Winter had continued he would have cleared 6ft. 7in. Treloar, Bartram and Green are young and are not yet at their peak.
