VON PAPEN’S TRIAL

PAVED WAY FOR HITLER CHARGE BY PROSECUTION NUREMBERG, Jan. 26. When the Denazification Court trying the former Nazi Minister, von Papen adjourned on Friday, von Papen was in the middle of a long discourse on his political and diplomatic career, in which he portrays himself essentially as a Democrat, says The Times’ correspondent in Nuremberg. He points out that as an alleged offender under the provisions of the political purge, which, in the American zone has taken on the character of a heresy hunt, von Papen is liable to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labour. The Court’s president is Dr. Camille Sachs, a local High Court judge, who was deposed by the Nazi regime. The indictment against von Papen specifically charged him with holding the golden emblem of the Nazi Party, and seeks to prove that by his political manoeuvres and his influence with Hindenburg he deliberately paved the way for Hitler.
