MILLIONS IN BACK PAY

U.S. STEEL WORKERS AGREEMENT REACHED NEW YORK. Jan. 26. The United States Steel Corporation and the united steelworkers have announced an agreement on a new standard of hourly wage-scale rates entailing 32,000.000 dollars in back pay and wage increases of about 17,000.000 dollars annually. The agreement eliminates wage rate disparities within and between plants of the corporation's five principal subsidiaries. Joint committees for the management of labour are tackling the corresponding task in 84 other steel companies and other United States steel subsidiaries. The union president, Mr. Murray, estimates that .the back pay will be approximately 100.000.000 dollars and the annual wage increases of 50,000,000 dollars for all steel companies. The United Press says the agreement is not connected with contract negotiations proceeding between the corporation and the union, nor with portal claims but other sources believe it will have some bearing thereon.
