£43,000 FOR BOOK
PRINTED IN U.S. IN 1640 {10.15 a.m.) NEW YORK, Jan. 29. An American record, possibly a world’s record price for a book, was paid for one of the 11 existing copies of a Psalm book published in 1640 and the first book printed in the British American colpnies. The book brought 150,000 dollars when sold at auction on behalf of the Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney Charitable Trust. The proceeds will go to the community hospital at Glen Cove, Long Island.

The four principles underlying the Government’s Austrian policy were, first, Austria must be independent; and secondly, the frontiers should be those of 1937. To those who knew the country the Yugoslav claims seemed completely baseless, but they must be investigated. Thirdly, Austria must eradicate Nazism; and fourthly, Austria must be made into an economic community. Austria, after a reasonable time should be allowed reasonable means of defence.
Lord Pakenham, referring to Russia taking Austrian soil, said reparations must not be used to strangle the economic life of a community.
