MORE HAZARDS

SWINGING OF BUSES NO LONG ROUTE PARKING AT PETTIES Borough buses coming down Gladstone road will continue to swing round to park outside Petties. This was the decision of the Gisborne Borough Council last evening. A report by the bus committee stated that the proposal that all borough buses should proceed by way of Read’s quay. Childers road and Customhouse, street to their allotted positions at Pcttie's corner was not recommended.' In the opinion of the committee, additional hazards would be created both at _ the entrance to the Gladstone road bridge and at the intersection of Customhouse street and Gladstone road, where the buses would require to be pulled out almost to the centre of Customhouse street in order to negotiate the turn into Gladstone road and drive up parallel to the kerb in front, of Petties.

The mileage, too, would be increased by approximately 100 miles per week. In turning the buses as at present in front of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company’s premises, the drivers exercised all clue care and observed the traffic regulations, concluded the report.

The town, clerk, Mr. W. M. Jenkins, advised that no reports of accidents through the buses turning as at present had been received.

The bus committee also reported on a request for a sent to be placed in the vicinity of Messrs Petties, Limited, for the convenience of bus patrons. The committee was unable to make a favourable recommendation to the request owing to the lack of suitable position. The suggestion put forward at a previous meeting, that a bus terminal and loading depot be established along Read’s quay in the vicinity of the R.S.A. building was also not considered practicable. A request from Cook County residents for the erection of a bus shelter at the corner of Wilson’s and Wainui roads was a matter _ which, in the opinion of the committee, should have been directed to the Cook County Council. The applicants are to be advised accordingly.
