CARE BY MOTORISTS
MINISTER MAKES APPEAL (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 21. The Minister of Transport, Mr. J. O’Brien, issued a further warning about the need for care in holiday motoring with more petrol and old cars and tyres. The Minister asked motorists to show consideration for others, and particularly to make allowance for errors of judgment on the part of children and elderly people. Pedestrians must also observe the simple safety rules. “Finally, to all road users,” added the Minister, “I would say bo sure that your alertness and sense of caution are not affected by indulgence in alcohol.”
secured their sections have expressed the utmost satisfaction with the policy followed by the committee. Early jn the present season the committee was placed in an awkward position of having a considerable number of heifers coming to profit and no settlers available to take them bv way of the customary allocations. Progress of land settlement in this district has been much slower than was expected, and stock secured by gift in the early stages of the scheme and subsequently added to has accumulated faster than it could be disposed of. The number of men still awaiting settlement made it imperative that the pool be held together if possible; and if, was decided to seek assistance in carrying the young in-profit heifers through the intervening period. : ; <:v Full-Season Arrangements
The position was publicised through the press,, and a number of young Kiwis were enabled to secure their allocation immediately: but about 20 head remained on the hands of the committee, and special arrangements had to be made for their being milked. Several farmers were asked to take a few head each through the season, and they accepted the responsibility with the provision that they should not be reclaimed before the end of the season. This provision was considered by the committee to be strictly fair, more especially as in most cases the heifers went back to men who had donated them and had reared them to the profit stage. This stock, of course, will be available for next season’s distribution to Kiwi settlers, and some have already been allocated in anticipation of their becoming available. The Kiwis concerned in these allocations have expressed themselves as well satisfied with the present arrangements for milking the heifers.
