BEST ALL-ROUND GIRL high school award The Old Girls’ Cup, competed for at the W a iron District High School, was won this year by Kitty Wong, she being adjudged the best all-round girl in the secondary department. Kitty Wong was the dux of the primary department in 1042, gained her school certificate in 104->. and has sat for university entrance this year. “ft. is an award which T am very pleased to make,” stated the hcarmaster, Mr. Q. H. . , hi his annual report. The report also stated that at the annual school sports championships were won as follows: Senior boys: Cl. Parminter and D. Hughes. Girls: Evelyn Taranaki. Intermediate hoys: D. Burrow?. dill: Nodinc Wisheart. Junior boys: W. Rofc. Girl: Joy Nugent. The dux of the primary department thi? year is Carol Hagen. Carnival Queen Competition Two nominations were received by the Wairoa Carnival Committee for the queen of the carnival competition to he conducted next month. They were from the Wairoa Retailers Association and the Inter-house Association. The latter chose Miss June Howell a? their candidate. It is hoped, with a view to creating greater interest, to secure the nomination of a third candidate. After a lengthy discussion in committee last evening, the Wairoa Borough Council granted the carnival committee permission to use Alexandra Park for the carnival on the Ui>ual conditions.
The weekly tennis tournament for the Gillespie Buttons, played on the Wairoa tennis courts, resulted iti a win for Mesdnmes Single and Mahon.

Shortly before noon yesterday, a young lad. Peter William Johansen, aged 16, suffered a fractured arm when he collided with a taxi cab being driven by Mr. D. Storey in Wairoa. After receiving medical attention, the sufferer was removed to the home of his parents. The cycle was badly damaged. Mr* and Mrs. 11. L. Harker 'have returned to Wairoa after spending a holiday at the Sounds.—Mr. and Mrs. R. Smythe, W r airoa, arc spending the Christmas holidays with relatives at Nelson.—Mr. F. Williamson. Auckland, is visiting his sister, Mrs. Carey, Wrairoa.
At the monthly meeting of the "Wairoa Hospitni Board tribute was paid to the late Mr. William Taylor, the board’s first secretary, and a motion of sympathy was passed with the bereaved relatives.
The Wairoa Hospital Board at its monthly meeting decided to seek permission from the Minister of Health to purchase an X-ray unit at a net cost of £950.
