FIRE AT TAUPO

LANDMARK DESTROYED A landmark of the early days ol Taupo, the home of Mr. Harry R'ickit, was destroyed by fire on Saturday night. The building, of totara construction, was originally one of the first stores in Taupo, having been erected near the main road by Mr. Joseph Rickit more than 70 years ago. It was later moved to its present site at the corner of Kaimanawa . and Tamamutu Roads and remodelled as a house. The fire started at 10.30. just as a large audience was listening to the closing stages of a concert by the Napier “Fun Doctors,” and the hall emptied rapidly for the counterattraction of the siren. Explosions as several sporting guns and their ammunition were burnt kept onlookers at a safe distance. There wore no insurances.
