GISBORNE LEAGUE
AMERICAN BASKETBALL PROSPECTS FOR SEASON Nominations for 10 mens and seven women’s teams have been accepted by the Gisborne American Basketball League and indications are that further teams will be nominated before the closing date on Monday. The season opens officially on April 30. At the recent annual meeting of the league the president, Mr. J. Booth, was in the chair, and the following officers were elected: —President, Mr. Booth; vice-presidents, Messrß. E. R. Matthews, F. Solomon, E. Fitzmaurice, G. A. Condie, T. Martin, N. H. Bull, J. O. Musgrave, C. H. Brittenden, H. Firdlay, A. F. Salmon, L. Miles and Senior-Sergeant G. Norris; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr. L. Roderick; chairman of executive, Mr. R. Richardson. The financial statement showed a credit of £6.
It was decided to make application for the use of the Army Hall on Tuesday evenings and another evening to be arranged, preferably Thursday.
The following recommendations were made to the incoming committee:—That referees enforce the rules of basketball, particularly in respect of correct dress and numbers; that teams when sending nominations name a member for possible refereeing duties and instruction; that the subscription be fixed at 2s 6d, with an addition of 3d per week for ground fees. On the suggestion of Mr. Richardson, a social committee is to be formed for the purpose of raising funds. The use of collection boxes instead of fees payable at the door was decided upon This measure is to be reviewed at the conclusion of the first round.
