A NEW TEAM

BASKETBALL PLAYERS PAST SEASON,REVIEWED A new team is to enter the competitions conducted by the Poverty Bay Basketball Association this season. The team which is from the Textile Company is to have ns its registered colours green and white gyms with white blouses, black stockings and sandshoes, it was announced at the annual meeting of the association held recently. At the end of the season it was decided that a cup should he presented to the team who had gained the most points during the year for neatness of costume, court appear* anoe and general conduct. The annual report and balance sheet showed that the association had had a successful year and in his opening remarks the chairman, Mr. N. H. Bull expressed the hope that the coming season would he equally successful. The election of ollicers resulted:— Patroness. Mrs. W. A. Bowie: president, Mrs. G. H. Scents; vice-presidents: Mrs. Norberg, Miss N. Miller, Miss M. Mason, Miss C. Baty and Mrs. Osmond; hon secretary, Miss Vera Masemnnn; hon. assistant secretary. Miss M. McCallum; hon. treasurer, Mrs. P. Beale; lion, auditor, Mr. W. S. McKee. Mention of the various successful tournaments conducted throughout the season was contained in the annual report presented to the meeting. The seven-a-side King’s Birthday tournament was held on June 4, the winners, H.S.O.G. Bed. being presented with the Bowie Cup. On July 2S the Henderson Shield tournament was held, H.S.O.G* A Red running out the winners. In the Robson Cup match the Gisborne team was successful in winning the match played on their home ground, hut Wairoa won the match played in Wairoa. Wairoa proved themselves superior by retaining the Glengarry Cup the Gisborne B grade representative team being defeated. Poverty Bay was also represented by one team at the New Zealand championships hold in Christchurch last August. They won four matches and had one draw. The financial statement showed that the association was still showing a credit, but was not in such a good position as last year. Thanks were extended in the report to the referees, the coach of the representative team, the St. John Ambulance Association, the hon. auditor, and all those who had helped the association during the season, particularly the Mayor, Mr. N. H. Bull. Those present at the meeting were:— Mesdames G. H. Sceats, P. Beale, Norberg, Somervell, Osmond, Williamson; Misses N. Miller, V. Johnson, J Ingram, M. McCallum, V. Massmann, S. Martin, L. Masemann, J. Forsyth, White and Mason. The meeting was presided over by the Mayor, Mr. N. H. Bull. At an executive committee meeting held after the annual meeting a grading committee was formed consisting of the secretary and the match secretary. The grading matches will take place on April 27, while the closing date for the registration of players was. fixed for April 20, affiliations on May 31 and special effort fees on July 31. Misses V. Masemann and N. Miller were elected selectors of the representative team for the season, and Miss Miller was also elected coach.
