MILE RIVER RACE

MISS B. SCOTT WINS DIFFICULT CONDITIONS Conditions on tho Taruheru River wore adverse on Saturday morning, when tho Gis* homo Swimming and Life-Saving Club conducted its annual river race for the Stoneham Cup. over a course from the Roebuck road bridge to the Trafalgar rotunda at the junction of tho Tanihoru and Waimata Rivers. A fresh breeze blowing upstream against tho run of tho current raised a mild chop on the surface, which militated against fast times and proved fatiguing to the contestants. One swimmer was unfortunate in being disqualified through tho action of a friend who used a boat to break the wind and give him cover, while another made no hones about having taken a tow from n boat over part of the course.

First place was secured by 'Miss Betty Scoat, an intermediate girl swimmer, who received ft long handicap and made the most of it. C. Scnnlan was placed second, and If. Bodle third. The winner’s time was I’liinin. 13 2-ssec. f and fastest, time was registered by K. Morse, the scratch entry, who covered tho mile in 26nbn. in 2-ssec.

Tho participation of a girl swimmer In the race was one of tho main points of interest, and Miss Scott received many congratulations on her performance. Handicapping for the race proved unnecessarily liberal, the limit-handicap entrant having covered almost half tho course before the scratch man was dispatched from the startingpoint. A fairly strong tide helped to cut down tho estimated time for the race, which was tho first swum for four years.

In a club championship race conducted by the Gisborne club at tho Macrae Baths on Thursday, I\. Morse secured the season’s title for the 220yds., in 2min. 45 4-ssec. H. Rodlo end T. * Turnbull dead-heated for second place closo behind the winner.
