U.S. SOLDIERS’ DIVORCES
ENGLISH BRIDES’ PLIGHT PLEA TO MRS. ROOSEVELT (9 a.m!) LONDON. Feb. 11. The Married Women's Association is approaching Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt on behalf of more than 200 English wives of American servicemen whose husbands are now back in the United States and are divorcing them • under American law. . It is expected that Mrs. Roosevelt will receive a* deputation of brides before she goes home. The association’s chairwoman said: “In most cases the husbands are divorcing their brides for the flimsiest reasons. Some of the women have children and, if divorced, will be unable to claim a maintenance allowance for them. The majority of the husbands are demobilised and have ceased to send allowances to their wives in England. We are urging that the American authorities should either make arrangements for these girls to go to America to defend themselves or some machinery should be brought into operation whereby the girls should be properly represented in America in divorce cases.
