SYDNEY. Feb. 11

Heavy seas and a strong undertow made yesterday the most dangerous and exciting day of the surfing season. Nearly 200,000 people crowded the beaches and at one beach alone the surf life-savers made over 50 major rescues. Despite the most difficult conditions, there was no loss of life. A 30ft. shark was sighted close in off QueensclifT and was driven away by a surfboat. Later the water had to cleared because o£ porpoises shooting the breakers. They do not attack bathers, but tiie life-savers thought that, because of their size and speed, they constituted a danger to swimmers. At Maroubrn the life-savers suffered minor injuries in surfboat and board accidents. ______
