INTERIM FORCE

R.A.A.F. INITIATIVE AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE SUPERSESSION LATER t 9 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Jan. 31. The Commonwealth Air Board is establishing a temporary air force of 20,000 men to retain adequate air defences until a permanent force is established. ' The temporary force is being formed on the initiative of the Air Board, pending a Government decision on the strength and other details of the permanent force, which cannot be made until the Empire defence plans have been settled. An R.A.A.F. order posted at all airstations calls for volunteers for two years’ service with the interim force. A spokesman said that refusal to join the interim force had no bearing on the date of an airmen’s discharge. Comnlaints were inevitable in the matter of demobilisation, but nothing seriouss was anticipated.
