CASTAWAYS RESCUED

LIVES SAVED BY NATIVE

PLANE’S RISKY LANDING (9 a.m.) BRISBANE. Jan. 20. A Torres Strait native saved the lives of five white companions when a cutter was wrecked on Hinchinbrook Island, North Queensland. As skipper of the boat he saved them from drowning in a storm and, when safely ashore, he provided food and water.

A Catalina yesterday saw a flash from the island and made a difficult landing to find the castaways who had improvised a heliograph from a piece of tin.

The whites said the native was the only one who could climb trees for coconuts, or catch fish.
