COFFINS RUN SHORT
STRIKE IN NEW YORK WORKERS’ PAY DEMANDS (10.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, Jan. 18. Metropolitan New York is rapidly exhausting the .supply of coffins as a result of a four-day strike of t.hp Coffin Makers’ Union. With an average of 2500 to 3000 deaths weekly, the undertakers have only 3000 in stock, of which over half are expensive models beyond the reach of the average family. The union demands a 20 per cent wage increase. The employers offer 5 per cent, with the balance to be arbitrated subject to adjustment by the Office of Price Administration of the coffin ceiling price.
