ACE FLIER’S TRIAL
SENSATIONAL TURN CALDWELL’S ADMISSION TRADING IN LIQUOR (10 a.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 19. The court-martial of acting-Group Captain Clive Robertson Caldwell took a sensational turn yesterday when he declared, on being asked to plead on the second of the four charges, "in view of the adverse finding of the court on the first charge and of similarity of the charge just read I will plead guilty.” He said that he realised this was tantamount to the admission of having engaged in the selling of liquor and to conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline. After the hearing of evidence on the first charge the court yesterday went into camera for 75 minutes to consider the verdict. It resumed without mentioning its decision, which is the usual procedure if the defendant is found guilty. After Group Captain Caldwell’s plea, a summary of the evidence relating to the second charge was read by tire judge advocate. The charge concerned selling of liquor through a leading aircraftman. The evidence on two further charges is yet to be heard.
