TESTS BEGUN IN 1933

JAPANESE BALLOON BOMBS ATTACKS ON AMERICA TOKYO, Jan. 15. Allied Headquarters revealed that Japan was experimenting on windborne bomb-carrying balloons to attack the United States as early as 1933. The Japanese planned originally to release the balloons from submarines off the west coast of America, but by the time that such became practicable Japan lacked the sea power to penetrate deep enough into the eastern Pacific and, therefore, homeland launching sites were used. The record balloon flight was made in January, 1945, across the ocean in one and onethird days. The slowest trip was 3.09 days.
