SETTLEMENT LIKELY

STEEL STRIKE THREAT ACTION BY CONGRESS (9 a.in.) WASHINGTON, Jan. 16. President Truman said yesterday that he still hoped for a settlement of the threatened strike of 800,000 steel workers scheduled for January 21. Mr. Truman said he also hoped that the General Motors management would reconsider the rejection of the factfinding board's report recommending a 171 per cent hourly wage increase for general workers. The President added that the strike would be settled now, as Congress had backed the fact-finding board with legislative authority.
