FIGHTING FIRES
MUCH WATER NEEDED DRY WEATHER DANGER The volume of water necessary' to fight a fire was illustrated by figures before (he Cook County Council at its meeting to-day 7. The figures were especially impressive in view of the present grave water shortage. The Gisborne Borough Council wrote asking for the payment of a fiat rate of £5 a year for water which might be used from the three hydrants recently installed at Makaraka in the event of a fire. Using one lead of hose to fight a fire, the letter stated, water would be consumed at the rate of 200 gallons a minute, or 12,000 gallons an hour. A largo fire would require the use of three leads. They would consume water at the rate of 000 gallons a minute, or 30.000 gallons an hour. The council considered that the rate of £5 a year was reasonable, and it was approved.
