FIGHT ON SHIP
STABBING BY SEAMAN NEGRO SENT TO GAOL (P.A.) AUCKLAND. Jan. 16. The early morning stabbing affray in the American ship Whistler last Sunday was described in the Police Court this morning when Simon Williamson, aged 38, a coloured seaman, admitted a charge of assaulting Heipar Dias, another member of the crew. The police said Williamson was concerned in a tight which was stopped by the third officer. Williamson, who had had liquor and was in a nasty mood, complained that he had been kicked by Dias. Two hours later, accused, who had been seen sharpening a pocket knife, met Dias in a companion way and stabbed him, inflicting a four-inch cut on tiie buttock. Williamson said in evidence that he had found it necessary when nightwatchman to speak to Dias about punching a boy and alleged that Dias kicked him. Later, he said, Dias grabbed him and he was forced to act in defence of himself. The magistrate sentenced Williamson to two months' imprisonment.
