POLAR DEFENCE
CANADIAN-U.S. STUDY POSSIBLE INVASION LINE EXPLORATORY MISSION (10 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Dec. 18. Allied diplomats disclosed that one of the first steps taken by the United States in working out with Canada the joint plans for the defence of Polar regions was the assignment of six observers to accompany the Canadian Army and Air Force expedition on 81 days Arctic exploration. The expedition will travel 3100 miles by snowmobile to gather military and scientific information. Tile expedition will leave Churchill, Manitoba, in the middle of February and finally reach Edmonton early in May.
The area for exploration hitherto has been considered an impenetrable barrier against attack. The Canadian Minister of Defence, Mr. Abbott, said there was nothing secret about the expedition. The military attaches of other nations were not invited as it was not known whether they would care to undertake the journey under such conditions. The exercise is essentially for testing military equipment under extreme conditions.
