LABOUR CONTROLS
MODIFICATION SOUGHT WORKERS OVER 30 YEARS T.U.C. MOVE IN BRITAIN (10 a.m.) LONDON, Oct.’2s. The Trade Union Congress announced that it is strongly urging the Government to drop all labour controls on men and women over 30 years of age. The Daily Express' industrial correspondent says that the Trade Union Congress is unlikely to succeed immediately. but its pressure is expected to lead tc a stage-by-stage reduction of the present controls before the end of the year.
The congress wants a modification of three major labour controls: First, the power of direction under the defence regulations which are applicable to ail persons of all ages although the Government has given assurances that this power is now kept in cold storage; secondly,' the control-of-engagement order which governs the appointment of men up to 50 and women up to 40; thirdly the essential works order which ties men up to 65 and women up to 60 to their present jobs in firms scheduled under the order.
The Daily Express points cut that the congress proposals would mean freedom foi nearly 7,000,000 workers to choose their own jobs.
