HIGH DEATH RATE

GERMAN CAPTIVES

RUSSIANS FREE SICK . MEN “MISERABLE WRECKS’* LONDON, Oct. 24. Decrepit German prisoners who have been discharged by the Russians told British questioners that of 100,000 Germans captured at Stalingrad only 6000 arc alive. Some died in Russian work camps or trains on which there were 200 or 300 corpses when it arrived at Frankfurt-on-Oder.

The British commandant, Captain J. G. Johnson, of the transit camp in which the bulk of the war prisoners from the cast were received, said he believed the reports were not exaggerated.

“One could well believe the death rate when he saw miserable wrecks coming through at the rate of 2000 daily,” he added. “The Russians are not releasing able-bodied men. Those released are all sick and incapable of further work. The released women from the Wehrmacht auxiliaries were either pregnant or suffering from venereal disease.”
