EARLY POTATOES

HARVESTING OPERATIONS WELL UNDER WAY Harvesting of early potatoes grown in the Gisborne district is now proceeding smoothly and in some cases the entire crop has been dug up. Soil and climatic conditions in certain parts of this district, particularly near Wainui Beach, are ideally suited for the growing of early potatoes and as this fact becomes more fully realised so the number of early potatoes grown here increases. Three years ago there were only a few acres of earlies grown round here, but this season there were approximately , 200 acres down. During the next few years it is expected that this acreage will be considerably increased. In the past Gisborne merchants have had to buy from other growing centres early potatoes to fill the market which the local crop was inadequate to meet, but now the position has been reversed and a number of tons have been transported from this district to outside centres.
