MAY LOSE TRADE
BRITISH SHIP LINES
USE OF CAPE HORN ROUTE
EXTRA COSTS INVOLVED (10 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 27,
Some British shipping experts ex-' press the opinion that the ban on using the Panama Canal will seriously affect British trade, says the Daily Mail. One shipping official declared that four or five days’ extra sailing which the CSpe Horn and Suez routes entail would cancel out the £2OOO which a 10,000-ton ship would pay for Panama Canal dues Furthermore, there would be extra payment to the crews and more food and oil would be required. The shippers would naturally choose the cheapest and quickest way of transporting their cargoes, which would be by American ships travelling through the Panama Canal. Accordingly, Britain would lose trade. The Dailv Mail adds that a Ministry of a War Transport official stated the Government would bear any extia cost “in the meantime.”
