ALLIED PROBLEM

REFUGEES IN REICH

1,000,000 ON HANDS

FOOD AND CLOTHES NEEDS

(11 a. m .) LONDON, Sept. 27. American officials in Germany estimate that nearly 1,000,000 destitute persons will be left on Allied hands during the winter, says the Associated Press’ correspondent. The refugees have hitherto been fed and clothed from stocks of captured and requisitioned German supplies, but these will be insufficient for the winter. More than 5,000,000 displaced persons have been returning to their own countries in the last four months and less than 500,000 who remain are expected to be repatriated before the spring. One hundred and seventy thousand Baltic Slates nationals refused to be returned to areas under Russia. Forty-thousand from Russian areas deny Russian citizenship. It is estimated that 250,000 Poles will refuse to return to Poland. The Allies have almost completed the repatriation of more than 2,000,000 Russians. The return of 25,000 Yugoslavs and 3000 Czechs from Germany has been blocked because of their German descent. The Americans will probably hand over to the Czechs more than 100,000 Germans remaining in Czechoslovakia.
