Messrs. H, C. Hanes and A. F. Salmon left for Wellington this morning to attend the annual meeting of the New Zealand Woolbrokers’ Association Mr. G. Brown, Puha, chairman of the Tairawhiti District Pig Council, left for Wellington to-day to attend the quarterly meeting of the National Pig Industry Council, which opens to-morrow. Mr. James Munro Bertram. Auckland, whose release from captivity after over three years’ detention by the Japanese has been reported, is the son of Mrs. E. S Bertram, Remuei'a, and the late Rev. I. E. Bertram, who many years ago was Presbyterian minister at Ormond. Mr. James M. Bertram was born in Auckland, and was educated at Waitaki and at Auckland University College, where he obtained a Rhodes scholarship, proceed ing to the United Kingdom to continue his studies. While in Eurone he was commissioned to travel to China, visiting Chinese Universities and studying the language. He wrote two books, “Crisis in China,” and “North China Front.” In February. 1941, he was apoointed press attache to the British Embassv at Chungking, and he was in Hong Kong when the Japanese attacked that stronghold and made captives the surviving members of its garrison.
