GEN. SLIM’S TRIBUTE
SOUTH-EAST ASIA ARMIES INDIANS’ FINE RECORD dO a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 3. General Sir William Slim, Commander of the South-East Asia Armies, in an order of the day, says: “You in this theatre, have played a great part in enforcing surrender. You have endured and achieved. Another task lies ahead. We have to restore peace and justice to these vast territories. We must succour and restore to their homes the thousands of captives we have freed from brutal confinement.” Tiie New Delhi radio disclosed that of the 1,000,000 troops in the Southeast Asia Command on June 1, 700,000 were of the Indian Army. One million Indian troops had been engaged in fighting the Japanese in Burma and the enemy overseas, including the Germans and Italians. Members of the Indian Army won 20 of 27 Victoria Crosses that have been awarded.
