WEICHOW ISLAND

OCCUPIED BY CHINESE LIUCHENG SURROUNDED CHUNGKING, July L. The High Command announced that the Chinese have captured Weichow Island, on the South China coast, which is garrisoned by only a small Japanese force. The Associated Press says new details of the Indo-China fighting revealed that the Chinese crossed the frontier into the mountains at points along a 100-mile front and captured three towns. Observers stressed that this did not represent an invasion aimed at ejecting the Japanese from Indo-China. Other troops mowed down the enemy remnants in Liuchow and surrounded the Japanese held in Liucheng, 12 miles northward. Street fighting is at present, raging in Paishou, 25 miles west of Kweilin.
