SHIP DELAYED

SHORTAGE OF CREW

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 30. Scheduled to sail at 4 o’clock on Thursday afternoon for Westport to load an urgently-needed cargo of coal for the Portland cement works, the Union Steam Ship Company’s vessel Kartigi is still delayed at Auckland as her crew is short of one fireman.

When the Kartigi arrived at Auckland from Portland on Wednesday morning three firemen signed off. Replacements were obtained, but on Thursday one of the men was arrested on a charge of desertion from an overseas ship and was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment. The other two replacements were not available when the ship was due to sail on Thursday afternoon and have not since reported.

Two replacements were obtained yesterday, but the ship is still awaiting another fireman.
