“A SACRED PACT”

LIQUOR IN KING COUNTRY (P.A.) WELLINGTON. April 26.

At Tuesday’s sitting of the Licensing Commission, the Rev. H. W. Milner, generaL superintendent of the New Zealand Alliance, said that there was ample evidence on Government files that an arrangement was made between the Maoris and the Government in regard to the prohibition of liquor in the King Country. In the eyes of a large percentage of Europeans, and certainly in the eyes of' the Maoris, the agreement was a sacred pact. Referring to Mr. Ballard's statement that he could find no reference in the files to any agreement, he said: "It would appear that there had been ample consent or request even if a signed and sealed document might not be available. The people would be shocked to realise what poor efforts, successive Governments have made to control liquor and thus safeguard tile Maori people."
