Princess Elizabeth’s Thanks
The Governor-General,- Sir Cyril Newall, has received the following telegram from Princess Elizabeth in reply to the message sent to Her Royal Highness: “Please convey to the Government and people of New Zealand my sincere thanks for their good wishes on the occasion of my birthday.—Elizabeth.—P.A. Fewer Fire Calls in Auckland Though 1022 fire calls wei'e answered by the Auckland Metropolitan Fire Brigade during the past year, this figure represented a decrease of 422 on the preceding year, imported the superintendent, Mr. W. L. Wilson, at the annual meeting of the Auckland Fire Board to-day. The total fire loss for the year was £76,521. Two persons lost their lives as a result of fire and five firemen and six civilians were injured.—P.A. jnter-Loan Library The objects of the inter-loan librai'y service, through which nonfiction works of all types are made available from a national pool under the control of the Country Library Service, were brought to the notice of the Gisborne Borough Concil on Tuesday night in a letter from the Turailganui Public Library Committee. The letter stated that under inter-loan the library was in a position to meet demands for almost any standard publication, without cost, and that the council or its members were invited to make the fullest use of the service. On the motion of Mx-. M. J. White, the library committee was thanked for the information.
