600,000 JAPS. CUT OFF
BY-PASSED ISLANDS
(11 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Feb. 9. Reliable sources in Washington estimate that over 600,000 Japanese are at present cut off from direct contact with their homeland. They are distributed as follows: Philippines, 200,000; Netherlands Fast Indies, 200,000; Marshalls and Carolines, 125,000; northern New Guinea, 45,000; New Ireland and New Britain, 45,000; northern Solomons 12,000; Marianas, 5000.
U.S. GENERAL PROMOTED
(10 a.m.) NEW YORK, Feb. 9. General Mac Arthur has recommended the promotion of BrigadierGeneral William Chase to the rank of major-general and has appointed him divisional commander. General Chase led the flying columns of the First Cavalry Division which liberated the Allied internees in the Santo Tomas camp in Manila.
