TOLL OF SURF

A drowning accident occurred at Thornton Beach, Whakatane, on Sunday. The victim was Samuel Alexander Robb, aged IG, of Thornton. Robb and several friends wove swimming in the surf when he was drawn into deep water and got into difficulties. Two of his companions attempted to help him, but the heavy surf made their task impossible and after a long struggle they were forced to return to the shore. They had to be helped on to the beach.
