U.S. TRANSPORT LOST

COLLISION IN PACIFIC (10 a.m.) WASHINGTON. Jan. 22. The Navy Department announced that a destroyer collided with an auxiliary transport in the Pacific on September 12. The transport subsequently sank 10ft from the point of collision. It had 50 tons of the Navy’s most powerful explosive stored. The explosive was detonated under water following fruitless efforts to save the vessel. No one was injured.
