OVER 68,000 KILLED

JAPANESE ON LEYTE HIGH RATIoTo U.S. DEAD (10 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Jan. 22. The total Japanese dead on Leyte Island is now 68,839 and prisoners number 692, exclusively of Japanese who were drowned trying to relieve the island. The over-all total is estimated at 128,000. The ratio is one American killed for every 25 dead Japanese. The ratio for the entire South-west Pacific war is one American killed, wounded or captured to 11 Japanese. A high officer estimated that only 2000 to 3000 Japanese are left in Leyte.
