CIVIL AVIATION
AUSTRALIAN LINES CASE FOR THE STATE if) a.m.) CANBERRA. Jan. 9. "The reasons given by Australia’s former director of civil aviation, Mr. A. B. Corbett, for his opposition to a statutory authority to control and operate the inter-Slate airlines appeared to deliberately misrepresent the findings of the inter-departmental committee,” said the acting Prime Minister, Mr. F. M. Forde. Mr. Corbett, who was chairman of the committee, said in a letter to the civil aviation interests that political control of (he airlines would cause delays on decisions, shortage of funds at the right time, and lack of expert knowledge. Mr. Forde said that, far from expressing apprehension about the development of civil aviation under a Government-owned corporation, the committee’s report, which was unanimous and which was - signed by Mr. Corbett, expressed the opinion that, there was no reason to believe that a public corporation responsible for civil aviation would not be effective. The committee was unanimous in its opinion that continuance of, the present system should be rejected because it was both unprofitable and inefficient compared with a. more integrated system.
