AFTERMATH OF WAR REPORT TO~AMERICANS BETTER RELIEF URGED (10 a.m.) NEW YORK. Jan. 4. “Thousands of Italians are literally dying of cold and starvation before your eyes,” said Clare Luce, the American author and Congress woman, who recently returned from Europe. She said that while the starvation situation was inevitable, more relief could be brought in from outside if the international situation were better handled. She said the United States had failed to adhere to its promise of 300 grammes of food daily for the Italians. Steps should be taken to help the Italians feed themselves by the provision of freezing trucks and railway cars. She instanced Italian inflation and the poor medical situation by an eight-year-old waif she took from an orphanage, bathed, clothed, had him medical examined, and placed in a boarding school. . His shifts, socks, and underclothes alone cost 42 dollars. The boy looked healthy, but had a heart condition, a lymphatic condition, a bronchial cough, low blood-pressure due to dietary deficiencies, trench mouth and bad chilblains.
