FUTURE OF ITALY
JOINT STATEMENT SOON (10 a.m.) LONDON. Jan. 4.
Mr. Churchill and President Roosevelt will shortly make a joint declaration on the future of Italy, said Mr. Harold Macmillan. British Minister at Allied Headquarters in the Mediterranean, at a press conference in Rome to-day, reports the Exchange and Telegraph correspondent.
Mr. Macmillan said: “I look forward confidently to a complete agreement.” He added that few appreciated the difficulties in Italy. Many critics who had not seen or who had only briefly visited the liberated territories did not realise the position. “We need patience and perseverance in dealing with Italy,” he added. “But whatever we do for Italy, it is nothing to what the Italians can and must do for themselves.”
