LAVISH SPENDING

NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS NEW YORITTHRONGS (9 a.m.) NEW YORK, Jan. 2. The New Year was welcomed in the most lavish fashion since the outbreak of tlie war. A crowd estimated at 750.000 crammed Times Square to watch for the fihst time three-ball electric lights swing from the top of the Times tower to mark the beginning of 1945. Night clubs, theatres and bars saw the most open-handed spending for years. Broadway shows, which are having their most prosperous season since the ’twenties, were packed. Drizzling rain did not deter the Times Square merrymakers. A force of 2345 police watched the crowd, but there was no disorder.
