FEDERAL SUPPLIES SHORTAGES DEVELOP FACTORIES CLOSE DOWN (9 a.m.) CANBERRA. .Tan. 3. Because of the continued drought, shortages of breakfast foods, vegetables and milk are imminent throughout Australia. Officers of the Department of Commerce said to-day .that production conditions are deteriorating at an accelerated rate, chiefly in New South Wales where even the coastal areas are drying up. The prospects for dairy stock feed in the coming months are poor, and there is little hope that the milkproduction target of 12.000,000 gallons for the 1944-45 season would lie reached. The 1943-44 production was 15,000,000 gallons, or eight per cent below the target set for the season. Many factories producing prepared cereal breakfast foods have closed down because of a shortage of ingredients. Vegetable production has also dropped far below normal.
