STUBBORN ENEMY
ALLIES SLOWED UP COUNTERSAT JULICH GOOD PROGRESS IN SAAR (10 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 6. To-day’s communique from Supreme Allied Headquarters says: “There are no substantial changes along the Roer River. Stubborn German resistance is continuing in the outskirts of Julich. We broke up by artillery fire a German counter-attack with infantry and tanks against Lucherberg, and captured Bergstein, eight miles south of Duren, against strong opposition. “Qur forces east of the Saar River have repulsed an enemy counterattack north-west of Saarlouis. We have crossed the Saar River at a second point in this area. Our armoured elements are closing on Saareguemines, and have freed Ruhrlingen, four miles north-west of Saareguemines. They have ' also reached Hundlingen, five miles west of Saareguemines. Other Allied forces have occupied Wustweiler, four miles south-west of Saareguemines. "Our troops qre advancing northeast of Saarunion, in the vicinity of Oermingen, five miles north-east, and Dehlingen, six miles north-east of Saarunion. “Our forces entered Merzweiler, six miles north-west of Hagenau, against strong resistance. The garrison of an enemy fort which has held out for over a week at Mutzig, nine miles west of Strasburg, has surrendered after the walls of the fort were breached. We have made gains of several miles in the high Vosges, and cleared Hohneck, a height, and Coldelaschlueht.
