U.S. AIR BASE FALLS

CAPTURE BY JAPANESE NEW THREAT IN CHINA CHUNGKING, Sept. 8. The Japanese have captured the American air base of Lingling, 75 miles south-west of Hengyang, says a Chinese communique. The Japanese, moving over a 60-mile front, are _at present within 100 miles of Kweilin. The Army spokesman said’ the Japanese were massing troops in northern Indo-China l'or a possible invasion of Kwangsi from the south with the idea of joining forces near tlie northern • border. This would be a great step towards the Japanese objective of organising an overland link between Singapore and Manchuria.

General Stilwell's communique reports that American Liberators sank three enemy freighters totalling 8000 tons 15 miles west of Takao, in Formosa.
