FORCED TO RETREAT

JAPANESE IN HONAN GO' a.m.) CHUNGKING, April 20. The Japanese forces which launch ed a new drive on the PeipingHankow railway have been forced to retreat after a severe battle in which they suffered considerable casualties, says a Chinese communique. Two Japanese columns which crossed the inundated region from Chungmow in eastern Honan are still engaged by Chinese forces south and south-west of Chungmow, where both sides suffered casualties. Reinforced enemy troops in northern Honan, at Chishantou, on the south bank of the Yellow River bridge, have started a drive against the Chinese positions, apparently in coordination with the offensive in eastern Honan. Heavy fighting is in progress.
