COURAGE AND SKILL

MINE-SWEEPERS’ WORK AWARDS TO PERSONNEL (11 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 7. The Gazette announces 41 awards to officers and men of the mine-sweeping service, with another 42 mentioned in despatches. It is seldom possible for reasons of security to reveal the precise nature of the little-known but important and dangerous work of the mine-sweepers, and the citation announcing the awards merely states that they were “for steadfast courage and skill on dangerous and important mine-sweeping operations.” The recipients of the awards come from all over the world from places as far apart as New Zealand and Argentina. Altogether there are over 25,000 men engaged in the minesweeping services in various parts of the world.
